Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: National Fudge Day

(image from here)

June 16 is National Fudge Day because of course it is. But what do we really know about this delicious treat, this chocolatey, creamy delight? Tune in to the Dickenbock Report on XRAY FM on the National Day Of Fudge as we explore the fudge you know - & the fudge you don't know.

Oh, & we'll announce the winner of the Dickenbock Report National Fudge Day slogan which is "Fudge around & find out." Except we announced it just now. So I guess we don't have to.

Tomorrow! Sunday, June 16, noon to 1pm, on XRAY FM - 91.1+107.1fm & online at xray dot fm. Do tune in. There'll be vegan fudge too!

This Week In Self Help (June 9 + 11 2024)

Though it's pretty obvious I am terrible at promoting this show, I do try to share when I have a new show here on the blog & also on Twitter & Facebook. In fact, I just share the blog posts, because I am relatively lazy. I had an image this week which was a chalk drawing of guts that my wife helped me with, but Facebook wouldn't let me share it because their AI thought it was a picture of someone nude. Which is sort of was - like nude without skin. I hope that the image above isn't too racy for Facebook.

This week the Dickenbock Report celebrated Cole Porter's birthday. You can listen on the Self Help Radio webpage directly by clicking this here link. Remember you'll need a username (SHR) & password (selfhelp) to listen. Or you can listen on the Dickenbock Report XRAY page here.

& of course Self Help Radio was a show about guts. Here's a direct link to that show. Sadly there's an issue with the KBOO website at the moment that prevented me from uploading there so you can only listen on the show's website. The same username/password combo above works here.

Finally, I had another morbid episode of Corporate Standardized Programming where I played lots of music by artists we lost in early April. You can listen to that show here.

That was the week that was.

Gutsy Films

(from the IMDb)

Our resident cinephile Chuck stopped by this week to talk about films featuring guts. Because "guts" was the theme. You should listen to the show at the Self Help Radio website. When you get to Chuck's segment, follow along with these helpful links he has provided:

Letterboxd list
YouTube playlist of films & trailers
IMDb list of films available to stream for free elsewhere

*Chuck's note: Right now it's just all the links seen here, but go ahead & give me a follow - I usually follow back.

Self Help Radio 061124: Guts

Wow. That's some gutsy sidewalk art!

Okay, I'm done with the guts puns. I'm not going to talk about spilling my guts or hating someone's guts or having a gut feeling or feeling gutted or anything like that anymore. The guts show is done. It was luckily not gut-wrenching. Frankly I've had a gutful of it.

But maybe you've got the guts to listen - or listen again? It's available now at the Self Help Radio website. Make sure you use the username/password combo SHR/selfhelp to listen. Normally it's also available at the KBOO website, but the site is having some issues. When I'm able to upload it there, I'll add that information here.

Lots of songs about guts + interviews + other stuff. Details below.

Whither Guts?

(image from here)

Though that image above is focused on the stomach, & the stomach is part of the guts, I hope you'll accept the picture in toto. Because the show is not about the stomach alone. But the guts. All the guts!

Oh how I hope you have the guts to listen to this show. I mean that figuratively, of course - you obviously have the guts or how else would you digest your food? & how gross is digestion, really? Could it be that at some point I had a stomach issue - because of eating fermented food at a local restaurant that specialized in fermented food - & it made me think, "What is this doing to my ill-prepared gut flora?" & that that led to me wondering about whether I would have the guts to eat there again? & which led to me wondering if I should do a radio show about guts?

That all is true! & now there's a guts show & my guts recovered eventually.

Tonight! I spill my guts! From midnight to 2am on 90.7fm in Portland, kboo dot fm every darn where.

& it's fine to hate my guts. I'm not that fond of them either.

Preface To Guts: Oh No Another Body Parts Episode!

(from here)

It is a time-honored tradition of theme-based shows to rely upon body parts every now & then. Hair, eyes, hands, feet, skin, mouths, ears, knees - since so many songs are about people & those people are made up of many different parts, it's only natural to sometimes focus on the parts instead of the whole. A song about a part that represents a whole might even be an interesting departure.

Self Help Radio this week has decided to focus on a body part - guts. Like other body parts, guts have a figurative meaning that is used as often if not more often than the literal one. Perhaps the songwriter is not generally inclined to pen a ditty about intestines. & yet of course some do. There's always someone writing a song about the thing you didn't imagine anyone would write a song about.

In fact, one might even say... Sorry, that's an awkward sentence. Should it be There's always someone writing a song about the thing about which you didn't imagine anyone would write a song? Is the second about superfluous? The sentence There's always someone writing a song about the thing you didn't imagine anyone would write a song feels incomplete to me. Oh no. Am I going to have to diagram that sentence?

Well I've lost my train of thought. I guess I wanted to point out it's another show about a body part. Which is something that happens on shows based on themes. Just usually it's not something as icky as guts.

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: Cole Porter's Birthday

(image from the Wikipedia)

Hardly anything is happening in the world, so tomorrow on The Dickenbock Report on XRAY FM, we take the time to celebrate the birthday of songwriter Cole Porter, born June 9, 1891.

We will of course feature musical reports - which is to say, his songs - but also a special report about Portland's annual Cole Porter Look-A-Like Contest. It would be unfortunate to miss such an hour of news.

Tomorrow! Sunday, June 9, noon to 1pm, on XRAY FM - 91.1+107.1fm & online at xray dot fm. Do tune in. It will be de-lovely.

This Week In Self Help (June 2 + 4 2024)

All the images of helicopters shared this week were taken by me with a kinda shabby camera I have that I use to take shabby pictures. I've taken lots of not-very-good images of helicopters is what I'm trying to say.

& yet we start with this week's overview of radio with The Dickenbock Report which aired Sunday the 2nd on XRAY. It was International Sex Workers' Day so I played songs about well you know. You can listen to + download the show at the Self Help Radio website directly by clicking here. Use the username SHR & the password selfhelp to access. You can also listen to the show at the XRAY FM website by clicking here. But you can't download it there.

As noted, the theme of Self Help Radio this week was helicopters. You can listen to that show at the Self Help Radio website by clicking here - same username/password situation mentioned above applies here - or you can listen on the KBOO website by clicking here.

The last hour on the KBOO website is my show Corporate Standardized Programming. This week I played lots of new releases. If you'd like to listen to it all by itself, you can do so at the Self help Radio website by clicking here. Again, it's already on the KBOO website with Self Help Radio. Again again, if you download it at the Self Help Radio you'll need to use the password.

And that was all! I mean, it's still a lot, but not nearly as bad as last week!

Self Help Radio 060424: Helicopters

While I was doing the show this morning I had the strangest feeling of déjà vu - had I done a show about helicopters before? I have been making Self Help Radio episodes for 22 years & I most definitely have repeated myself - both accidentally & deliberately - but that's why I created the page that lists all the themes I've explored. Helicopters as a theme wasn't there. I must have been remembering a radio I did in a parallel universe.

Which is sad. I had hoped that parallel universe me had found something more constructive to do with his time.

Meanwhile! We had a good time pretending to be whirling about in the sky for a couple of hours. We chatted with helicopter weirdoes, we heard helicopter songs, & I was very lucky it wasn't as loud as it could've been. My ears are a bit worn out. & I might need theme some more in my life.

Listen to the show either at the KBOO Self Help Radio page or at the Self Help Radio website. At the show's website, please use the username SHR & the password selfhelp to access. All the stuff that happened is listed below.

Whither Helicopters?

It is a shameful thing to admit, but the show this week started with a meme.

Maybe it's a meme? It certainly started with Facebook. Facebook is basically unusable to me at this point because I no longer can go to my general timeline & see what my friends are doing - it's filled with paid "suggested for me" things that I didn't chose & don't care about. What I do look at are the "Facebook memories" - I've been on Facebook for fifteen years so it's an accidental scrapbook where I can especially see pictures of my now-gone pets.

But also there are the arguably funny things I post. This is something I found on the Tumblrs many years ago that Facebook memories showed to me in February or March:

Sadly I don't know where it's from so I can't credit the creator! It did make me think if a radio show about helicopters would be fun. So I started to plan for one.

Inspiration is kinda stupid some of the time.

There's a Self Help Radio show about helicopters tonight on KBOO. That's midnight to 2am on 90.7fm in town & online at kboo dot fm. Hopefully it won't be too loud. But keep your head down.

Preface To Helicopters: Damn You John Mulaney!

It probably goes without saying that I plan my shows sometime in advance. I often get an idea & not return to it for weeks, months, even years. (My oldest folder on my computer where I save ideas is from 2010. To be fair, it isn't a very good idea.) Doing a show with the theme helicopters probably came to me in February, & I announced it on my website about a month ago.

Imagine my surprise when I took the time to watch John Mulaney's Netflix Show Everboy's In LA & discovered his third episode - which aired live May 7 but which I finally saw last week since I didn't watch the show live - was about helicopters.

Granted, his show was watched & continues to be watched by millions. My show, on the other hand, is heard by maybe three people - & not at a time. & granted, his show is always going to be better than mine - he had Joyce Manor on the show & Fred Armisen had a really sweet & cool segment with LA punks. But still I don't want to feel like a copycat!

Please accept my assurance that I did not plan a show about helicopters after seeing Mulaney's. Nor did he speed up his timetable because he knew I planned a show about helicopters in early June. We do not talk, John Mulaney & I. & a fake Bob Dylan has never called my show.

Now that that's out of the way - why a show about helicopters? I'll tell you tomorrow.

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: International Sex Workers' Day

June 2 is International Sex Worker Day. As it says at nswp.org:

Sex workers around the world continue to face a wide range of barriers to accessing justice, both as victims of crime & when charged with crimes. Since sex work is widely criminalized, most sex workers are denied access to the benefits & rights afforded to other workers under labour laws & face the risk of criminalization, detention, deportation, & legal sanction.

Tune in to the Dickenbock Report tomorrow as we talk about sex work, including its history, with of course many musical reports. It is not a subject Dick Dickenbock is comfortable with, but he is a professional, & we're sure he'll power through.

Tomorrow! Sunday, June 2, noon to 1pm, on XRAY FM - 91.1+107.1fm & online at xray dot fm.

One note: Dick Dickenbock does not have an OnlyFans account. That is not him. You should know better.

This Week In Self Help (May 26, 27, 28,29, + 31 2024)

Holy moley I had a busy week in radio. My word.

It started Sunday the 26th which was World Dracula Day. That's what we explored on The Dickenbock Report on XRAY. Click here to access the show from the Self Help Radio website. Click here to listen on the XRAY website.

You may notice that files on the Self Help Radio website require a username & password. Those are SHR & selfhelp. Sorry for the inconvenience.

On Monday the 27th I subbed twice on KBOO. Unfortunately, they don't archive those shows on the KBOO website, but if you'd like to listen to either of them, let me tell you about them. The first was me just doing a general format play-what-I-want show. Click here to listen to that one. The second was a couple of hours of interesting sounds I've recently come across - experimental, jazz, electronic. Click here to listen to that one.

The theme of Self Help Radio was "drain." You can listen to that show by clicking here - or you can listen on the KBOO website. The show I do after Self Help Radio, Corporate Standardized Programming, is included with the KBOO file. If you'd rather listen to it alone - it featured artists we recently lost - you can find that show here.

A long time ago on WRFL I did a Self Help Radio episode with the theme "mud." I updated that show - well I played more songs, I didn't really talk much about mud - on Wednesday morning. Click here to listen to that show.

Finally, just today! I subbed the Songcircle & I played lots of songs by Alex Chilton covered by artists who admired him. Click here to listen to it on the Self Help Radio website. Click here to listen to it over on the KBOO website.

No one's counting but if I had to guesstimate it would seem like I made seven radio shows this week for a total of twelve & a half hours of radio. It's really time someone put a stop to this.

Self Help Radio 052824: Drain

Feeling drained? Think everything's going down the drain? Think life is like a drainpipe? If you answered any of these questions - I don't really care how you answered them - you may have the word "drain" on your mind a little too often. & that might mean that you will tolerate a radio show with the theme "drain." Which was this week's episode of Self Help Radio.

In addition to drain-based music we had interviews like we do. & I found a lot of novelty tunes based on drains - by the Bonzos, Allen Sherman, Charlie Weaver, & Morey Amsterdam - which I sprinkled throughout the show. It is really rare I find so many humorous tunes. I didn't want to just put them in one set.

In any event, all this talk about a radio show with the theme "drain" is draining. Listen now at either the Self Help Radio website or at the KBOO website. At the former, remember the username/password combo SHR/selfhelp. At the latter you won't need that - but then you can't download the show. Everything that happens on the show is below.

Whither Drain?

One might think of this show as a companion piece to a previous show with the theme "tired." While I am resting more than I have been for a year, I have found that giving up a radio show only created more time for me to fill with other things - mostly obligations I take on to help the radio stations at which I volunteer. Is that draining? It is. Do I feel completely drained? Not at the moment. But is it enough for me to think about the word "drain" & whether it would make a good theme for a radio show? It is!

Listen to how it all turned out tonight, Monday, at midnight, on 90.7fm KBOO here in Portland & online everywhere at KBOO dot fm. It shouldn't be any more draining than any of other shows.

Sunday, May 26, 2024

Preface To Drain: Drains?

Y'see. I wanted a show that wasn't necessarily about drains but could also include drains. But also the verb form of drain meaning to cause water (or other liquid) to run out but also to sap of vitality. If it were just a show about drains - like the one above - how could I feature songs about feeling drained?

Words are funny, with so many definitions. I am trying to be inclusive. You see.

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: World Dracula Day

May 26 is World Dracula Day. Bram Stoker published his classic gothic horror novel on that day in 1897 - 127 years ago. While Dracula was not the first vampire, he remains arguably the most iconic one.

Tune in to the Dickenbock Report tomorrow as we report on the famous Count. In addition to many musical reports, Dick Dickenbock's favorite movie critic will recommend some vampire films. So you will have a film or two to watch for your World Dracula Day celebrations. Or you could just read the book. It's in the public domain.

Tomorrow! Sunday, May 26, noon to 1pm, on XRAY FM - 91.1+107.1fm & online at xray dot fm.

We're doing the show in the sunlight surrounded by garlic just to be safe.

This Week In Self Help (May 19 + 21 2024)

(Not sure if I approve of the glee on display for eagle grinding...)

Hooray for eagles! They deserved a radio show. & maybe now I don't have to live in fear of them swooping down & treating my hair like a salmon.

If you'd like to listen to that show, by gum, go to this direct link right here. You will need the username SHR & the password selfhelp to access. & you can download it!

You can also on the KBOO website, here is that link. No password needed.

The KBOO link also includes this week's episode of Corporate Standardized Programming (which follows Self Help Radio). On that show, I played lots of new releases. If you'd rather listen to it/download it from the Self Help Radio website, here is the link for that. Same username & password for Self Help Radio apply.

The Sunday before all that was The Dickenbock Report, a show about frogs on Jumping Frog Jubilee Day. Including a live remote! The show is on the Self Help Radio web page linked here, & also on the XRAY web page.

Hooray for eagles! Hooray for America!

Self Help Radio 052124: Eagles

Eagles are such majestic creatures. They symbolize beauty, bravery, courage, honor, pride, determination, & grace, among other things (according to the internet). Sportsball teams are named after them, although it's certain their deadly talons would destroy most sportsballs. They're not just the national birds of the USA but as powerful for some as the flag. Despite all this, no one stepped up to stop Self Help Radio as it did a show with the theme "eagles." Does no one love America?

Luckily eagles are powerful enough beasts that they can endure the insult. & you might enjoy all the songs about them if you're an eagle aficionado. Plus there are interviews with eagle-related folk. I thought maybe I should've done this show around the fourth of July but now I think I'm glad I didn't. I'd be chased out of town by firework!

Listen to the show now either at the Self Help Radio website (where you're need the username SHR & the password selfhelp) or the KBOO website (where you won't need those). The songs & the talking that happened are noted below. Enjoy, & as I've said more than once, I'm sorry, America.

Whither Eagles?

Why wouldn't one do a radio show about eagles? Who asks that sort of question in America? (Maybe I shoulda waited to do this show in July...)

It's at this point I remind you that one of my dumb rules about Self Help Radio is that the theme relates to songs not bands. So unless The Eagles wrote a song about eagles, you won't hear the Eagles on this show. But also I confess I am not a fan of the Eagles so even if the Eagles wrote a song about eagles you probably wouldn't hear a song by the Eagles on the show.

Why do a show about eagles in May? Seriously, I only just realized I should've waited. But a while back when I was looking at some children's videos on the Youtube about some other theme, the algorithm took me to a video called something like "Ten Interesting Facts About The Bald Eagle." I didn't make it past the animation or the pleas to like & subscribe but it did make me wonder whether there were enough eagle songs I liked to make a radio show about eagles.

Turns out there were & that show is happening tonight! Midnight to 2am. On 90.7fm in Portland & online everywhere at kboo dot fm.

Listen if you love America! & remember: the NSA is listening so they'll know when you're not listening.
