Almost a week early, here's this year's Self Help Radio Valentine's Day show - this year about falling in love. I seem to have a different idea of what "falling in love" means than many people - I always find I can love people easier than fall in love with them. I suspect I've only been in love maybe five or six times in my life. & usually those times are the same feelings I associate with falling in love in songs.
There is one possibly unromantic comment I make about falling in love in the show. I hope I can be forgiven for it. If you don't hear it, though, I am certainly not going to point you to it!

Unrequited love may be the most romantic of all. If something never was, it can therefore, always be. Nothing was ruined. Karl will be ok. Here's how his story might have ended: After a failed marriage, Karl's love finally realized he was everything she really wanted in a partner but had been too immature to know. They meet again, in their hometown, and dance on snow sparkling under a full moon. It's magic. They start seeing each other regularly, although long distance because they have homes and jobs in different cities. She has kids, some with problems. Come to think of it, she's actually a lot more frazzled and less of a carefree, fairy spirit now. In fact, she really looks and acts nothing like the muse of his past. Plus, she demands time for communication and connection but is never available when he needs to spend time as her life is a bit more hectic. He grows disappointed and disillusioned. He realizes he loved the thought of her more than the reality of her. He says goodbye. He returns to the fairytale of unrequited love and hopelessness, as this is indeed where he feels the deepest and his heart is most full.
