Preface To Haloes: A Childhood Memory

(comic by Easterby)

This is a story I'm sure I've told before but since almost noone reads this blog it's fine if I tell it again. But first I want to tell you that it's been a constant in my life that the things that I have wanted to believe have butted up against the things that are. This is not much of a problem for many people, who are able to contextualize their experiences so reality corresponds with what they believe - whether they've chosen to believe it, or whether it was indoctrinated in them somehow. No judgements - I'm almost certain they're happier than I am.

When I was six, my mother - who was German - took me, my little brother, & I believe one of my older brothers, Ralph, to Germany. It was an experience for which I was wholly unprepared. I mean, I was six. Another country? What the fuck?

For example, I remember being fucking terrified at seeing men walking around with military-grade weapons - I guess whatever the equivalent of AK-47s was at the time - at the airport. It is a memory that came back to me when, just two weeks ago, I arrived at the Berlin airport on my way home to see soldiers patrolling the space with such weaponry just as they did fifty-some-odd years ago.

One thing I was excited about was the flight. If there was one thing I was almost certain I knew, it was that angels lived on top of the clouds. You couldn't see them from down below - of course not! don't be stupid! - they were on top of the clouds. I felt, at age six, I had seen so many pictures of angels on clouds (probably not photos but, again, I was six years old) that they must be there. I pictured not whole cities of angels - although why not? - but rather the occasional angel here & there, plying their wares. I don't know if I imagined harps or other such things, but I knew I would know them by their wings - & white robes - & their haloes.

Because angels had haloes. I am fifty-two years removed from that little dumbass so I can't explain what I might have been thinking but I do have a memory of looking out of the window of the plane - my mother had the window seat, I think, so I had to clamber over her - & saw clouds as far as the eye could see - all strikingly bereft of angels. Did I check now & again to see if maybe angels congregated in other spaces? I don't recall. But it was perhaps one of the first times - if not the first - the world took something I thought was almost certainly true & said back to me, "Nope."

For many people at age six, a question to an adult might have resolved the issue: "No, dear, angels are in heaven not on tops of clouds." But I didn't confide in anyone my disappointment because my family had a way of making me feel stupid when I was wrong ("You thought what? Are you fucking stupid?"). Therefore I kept these observations & revelations to myself. But I'm pretty sure from that point forward I came to think there were no such things as angels.

& maybe haloes too?

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: Volcanoes!

The summit caldera of Mount Pinatubo as seen on August 1, 1991. Lake Pinatubo later formed on the caldera.
(image from the Wikipedia)

Starting on June 7, 1991, at Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, "the first magmatic eruptions took place with the formation of a lava dome at the summit of the volcano" (according to the Wikipedia). Thus began the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. To commemorate that event 35 years later, the Dickenbock Report on XRAY FM will report on volcanoes.

Remember! The Report is now inexplicably two hours long! Listen from 11am to 1pm on XRAY - 91.1+107.1fm in Portland, xray dot fm everywhere.

Dick Dickenbock wants me to tell you, "It'll be a blast!" I told him I would not say that.

This Week In Self Help: May 29 + 31 & June 2

An old two-story house whose windows have just been replaced.

That's a picture from a long time ago. I think during the early days of the pandemic. A house in our neighborhood that was being renovated. They had just replaced the windows. So I titled the image "replaced the windows." It was one of the few images I had that I might use for a radio show with the theme "replacement." I didn't use it until now. What was this all about? Oh yeah the radio shows I did this past week.

A week ago, May 29, I was on The Songcircle on KBOO with a show featuring lots of new releases. You can listen to that show on the KBOO website.

On May 31st, it was the first two-hour episode of The Dickenbock Report on XRAY in its current timeslot. We reported on National Smile Day. You can listen to that show on the XRAY website.

On June 2nd, Self Help Radio on KBOO had a show with the theme "replacement." You can listen to that show on the Self Help Radio website or on the KBOO website.

Also on June 2nd, Corporate Standardized Programming on KBOO played music by artists we lost in January of 2026. You can listen to that show on the Self Help Radio website or on the KBOO website (after Self Help Radio).

That's that!

Stuart

Our old beagle Stuart in bed looking over at me.

Stuart lived with us for about 207 days. Under seven months. His death was shocking & tragic. He had become such an integral part of this household despite him not knowing us for most of his life. We had only a little idea what Stuart had been through. The only morsels of information we had from that past were the stories we were told by his sort-of owner & the Seattle Beagle Rescue people. & this one tantalizing photo of Stuart as a puppy.

Maybe Stuart at six or nine months?

The reason we got Stuart is because of our dog Pete. Pete is now three but from the time he was about six months old (maybe the age of Stuart in the picture above), Pete had terrible separation anxiety. He grew up with two big sisters - a chihuahua & a beagle girl - who were not the chillest of dogs. We kind of felt Yoko in particular amplified Pete's condition. My wife Magda did her best to treat Pete - behaviorally & chemically - but nothing seemed to work. When Yoko died last year - another tragic story - I began to think what Pete needed was another male beagle. We had had male beagles before & they had a kind of relaxed vibe. When I thought my battered heart could take another dog into it, Magda began looking for a male beagle - & we thought preferably older - to help Pete with his separation anxiety.

Spoiler alert: it seems to have worked.

Stuart & Pete sleeping together on the divan in the front of the house.

But Stuart's introduction into the house was not without its problems. The first of which is that everyone was dishonest about Stuart's actual situation. We were told he was around eight years old & weighed 25 pounds - in Magda's words, "He's perfect!" We only had their testimony & this picture of him to go on.

Undated pic of a younger Stuart.

Here's what we knew about Stuart. He had been living (probably since he was a pup) with a woman in Washington State who now had dementia & couldn't take care of him anymore. She was going to a facility to take care of her. Stuart had been temporarily adopted by the ex-husband of the niece of the woman with dementia (you couldn't make this up). The husband of the woman with dementia did not want Stuart &, we were told, "left for Idaho" once his wife was situated. The niece ex-wife also did not want Stuart - after the divorce she went to Oklahome. The ex-husband - a kind man named Robert - could not keep Stuart. He was going to surrender him to Seattle Beagle Rescue but because Magda had been chatting with them they arranged something unusual - we went up to Tacoma to pick Stuart up from Robert. (It was halfway between when he lived & where we live.)

Stuart on his first night with us.

Right away there were problems. Robert told us Stuart was nine - not eight. (We now think he was closer to ten.) & Stuart very obviously did not weigh 25 pounds. On his first vet visit, he weighed in at 55 pounds. He was not a small dog. & Magda, to her credit, did not turn around & leave once we met him. Stuart was very hard to control & he had to have a ramp to get him into the car. Robert insisted he was not fat but he was certainly treated like a dog with obesity issues.

Stuart lying on his stomach.

The ride home was rough. Magda complained about being misled. Stuart whined the entire time. When we got home he whined more & barked more. His name, by the way, had been Dexter but because we have a Beatle/Beagle naming convention with our dogs, we renamed him Stuart, after Stuart Sutcliffe. Stuart never had a problem with that name & never responded if we called him Dexter. Furthermore, thanks to an obscure Jon Stewart interaction with Tracy Morgan I remembered from the Daily Show, I took to calling him the nickname Morgan gave Stewart: Stu Beef. Because he was a beefy boy.

Beefy boy on the divan.

Everyone who knows me knows I'm a softie & I loved Stuart instantly. I am not misrepresenting Magda when I say she did not. She was angry about what she felt was deception carried out to get him adopted & she worried about having the strength to help him if he needed to be lifted or carried. & to be fair his whining & barking were very annoying. He was hungry pretty much all the time, & we believed that his barking & whining got him food when he wanted it at his previous home - ergo, the 55 pounds he carried around. Magda openly discussed "giving him back" but I told her I wasn't going to do that. I said that whatever had happened to him in his previous life, or now, he had done nothing to deserve anything bad happening to him. Magda usually gets what she wants. She did not get what she wanted this time.

Stuart in bed.

His barking & whining aside, Stuart was a good boy. He got used to jumping on the bed or the sofa & it was as if we had a walrus in the house. He seemed to sense that I was his number one supporter so he would sit with me - & sleep beside me at night. Or maybe I slept beside him - I go to bed later than everyone else so I would have to move him when I came to bed. But one thing Stuart might not have had much in his previous life was something it turned out he fucking loved: he loved going on walks.

Me walking Stuart.

Okay, sometimes he needed to be dragged away from a smell. But truly he was walking with us from the get-go. In the early days it was rough, he would pant like he suffered from COPD. We worried we might have to carry him & we couldn't really do that (tho we did get him a harness with a handle just in case). But since we walk the dogs twice a day, & since we were regulating his food, he got thinner & healthier & we didn't worry about him on walks any more. Indeed, he began to rush into the garage to demand-bark that we go on walks in a similar way to demand-barking for food. (Well - I give the dogs treats at different spots during our walks, so certainly he had incentives for walking.) He had been otherwise indifferent to other dogs but over time he actually became interested - & always a little baffled if they were aggressive toward him. In sum, he got used to his new life pretty quickly, he even got to develop habits he might otherwise not have, & he found his space in our family unit.

Stuart with his brother, sister, father, & mother.

You might be wondering if Magda ever came around to accepting Stuart, & the answer is, she did. It was for the reason we adopted him - she will tell you, "Stu fixed Pete." Pete would have a very tough time when we left the house, he would run around the house, froth at the mouth, do self-destructive things. Something about Stuart's chill beagle energy tempered Pete's anxiety. Magda has cameras around the house to keep an eye on the dogs when we leave - one of them in the front window. Stuart would sit front & center on the divan there so often we began to refer to it as the "Stu-Cam." & as we left the dogs alone more & more, the Stu-Cam told us they were doing fine - even Pete.

The Stu-Cam: Stuart, Pete, & Pauline waiting patiently at the front window.

It was amazing to be able to leave the house for more than a couple of hours. As much as I loved Stuart's love, his cuddles, his walrus body next to mine on the sofa, this was his greatest gift. He never quite got playful with Pete - Magda saw them play only once - but he lost enough weight (about ten pounds) to get in the car on his own, to roll on his back, to even grab food off the counters like the naughty beagle he could be. & I should mention the car - he loved to stick his head out the window when we were driving. It was truly one of his joys.

Stuart sticking his head out the back window of a car.

Since we didn't know much about him, his past history, there were of course issues. He seemed to have lots of allergies & had an ear infection at one point. It seems like he had to wear a cone several times. But that he was healthier than when we got him was undeniable. & since you know the end of this story you know how that makes everything all the more sad.

Me & Stuart.

Because Stuart had helped Pete with his separation anxiety, Magda & I were able to go on vacation to Europe. We had people staying at the house with the dogs & cats & by all accounts everyone was doing fine. The day before we left they reported that Stuart didn't want to walk. We thought allergies, or something else. While we were in the air on the way home, the people staying at the house took him to an urgent care place. This den of quacks misdiagnosed him & sent him home. When I saw him - & I confess I had wanted to hear him bark with joy upon seeing me - he looked thin & miserable & had some swelling on his face. The next day he had stopped eating & Magda took him to a better urgent care place where the doctor, upon examining him, diagnosed him with lymphoma. Magda & I talked on the phone about getting him pain meds & bringing him home to have someone put him to sleep here the next day. But he made the decision for us. He died in Magda's arms, barely thirty-six hours after he began to show symptoms.

Stuart on the sofa.

Everyone he met was charmed by him, by his natural chillness & kind vibe. He didn't have a mean bone in his body. He might have been a little too motivated by food (he was a beagle after all), & we have wondered if maybe he might have been happier to have eaten himself to death. We had hoped Stuart would help Pete & he certainly did, but he also became a sweet friend, a great companion, an unmistakable presence in a house filled with giant personalities. In spite of the challenges, we could not have hoped for a better creature to come into our lives when he did.

Stuart by the front door.

As for me, I have been grieving him for over a week now. He slept on the little dog bed in my computer room, right behind me, & when I would leave the living room, he would follow me wherever I went. He slept with me when I napped up until a month or so before he died - I assumed he got tired of all the hugs I gave & all the kisses I showered him with. Maybe he was starting to feel bad. Magda hated it but I loved when he would bark when I came home. Sometimes the barking & whining was too much but now I miss it terribly. I miss him terribly. I knew we didn't have as long with him as we would with the other dogs, whom we adopted as puppies. But seven months? It's all so fucking unfair.

Stuart & Pete on the divan.

It's a testimony to how good a dog he was that I could write so much about him after only knowing him for such a short time. I hope he knew how much I loved him, how much Magda came to love him, how much he brought to this house. I hope he felt enough at home - it seems like he did, but who knows. & I am so sad & sorry we could not help him at the very end. We did what we could but he deserved better.

Oh sweet Stu-Beef. Thank you. I love you.

Self Help Radio 060226: Replacement

A mostly empty sign on which is written the words "Replacement Needed" are written, plus the Self Help Radio logo is in the corner.

Whew! I wasn't replaced! It turns out that no one at KBOO even noticed I was gone!

Still, I think it was a good theme with lots of diverse songs that I enjoyed putting in what I hope is a manner which makes it pleasing to listen to. You have to be the judge of that. Also I am almost replaced, I talked to professional replacements, & also to a sci-fi writer (who may or may not have been replaced by aliens). Most of what happens on the show is noted below.

Listen if you want at the KBOO website or the Self Help Radio website. Altho of course you can find something better to replace it, I'm sure.

Whither Replacement?

An image of an old kerosene lamp, called a replacement lamp.
(image found here)

Yesterday I got ahead of myself & told you why the theme of this week's show is "replacement." But I'll tell you again. It's because I had originally planned that theme for last week, right when I was getting back from vacation. The joke would be that I had gone away & been replaced. But I had only two days to prepare that show & I was unable to do that. So that's the theme this week - kinda devoid of the context.

It has been hard to find images that can mean "replacement" tho. The one above is in the public domain, & the website calls it a "high-resolution photo of light, antique, old, lantern, shine, lamp, lampshade, lighting, light fixture, mood, replacement lamp, kerosene lamp, scattered light." I wasn't sure exactly what a replacement lamp was, & there are no real answers on the internets. This website has an article about "finding replacement lamps" but it doesn't specify a kind of lamp called a "replacement lamp," it's just a lamp that replaces another one.

In any event, I don't have any songs about replacement lamps so it shouldn't matter.

What almost matters is that there's a Self Help Radio with the theme "replacement" on the radio tonight, midnight to 2am, on KBOO - which airs at 90.7fm in Portland & online at kboo dot fm. & it may be a self-fulfilling prophecy because I know for sure I am not irreplaceable!

Preface To Replacement: Terrible Planning

(comic by Tommy Siegel)

So. I went away on vacation. I got back on a Saturday. I had two days to put together an episode of Self Help Radio. I thought it might be funny if I discovered I was replaced after those two weeks. So the theme would be "replacement."

Then lots of shit happened. Some of that was jet lag. Other of that was being an old person who can't get shit done no matter how much time one has. It's fucking weird.

Circumstances conspired that I couldn't do that show & I did a different one. & now it's time to do that show.

& it has occurred to me that this is what I usually do before the show, explain the reason for the theme. But I guess I'll do that tomorrow too. Oops.

It's not like this blog is known for great reading or insights or anything!

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: National Smile Day

A small window in which someone has pasted a few smiley face stickers.

May 31st in National Smile Day. Despite not having any of his original teeth, Dick Dickenbock believes a smile is very important, so we will discuss smiles, as well as playing musical reports about smiles, tomorrow on the show.

About the show - oh dear it appears we have been allowed one more hour of the news every Sunday! That's right, The Dickenbock Report will now air from 11am to 1pm on XRAY! One wonders how Dick Dickenbock pulled that off.

Please join us for the first two-hour Sunday episode of The Dickenbock Report on XRAY tomorrow from 11am to 1pm. It happens on 91.1+107.1fm in Portland, & everywhere at xray dot fm.

Perhaps this is something to smile about!

The Past Three Weeks In Self Help

A photo from inside a plane of some countryside in the Netherlands, taking as the plane approached the Amsterdam airport.

Since I was away on vacation, I haven't been giving these useless updates. Now that I am back, I'll resume. So sorry about that.

Because even tho I was on vacation, I made radio shows for you. & here's what they were:

May 10. The Dickenbock Report on XRAY. This was before the vacation. It was World Ocean Day. You can listen to that show here.

May 12. Self Help Radio on KBOO. On vacation. Three hours of songs about tomatoes. You can listen to that show here. Or you can listen to that show here.

May 17. The Dickenbock Report on XRAY. On vacation. Wayne Seconds guest hosted. You can listen to that show here.

May 19. Self Help Radio on KBOO. Still on vacation. I played a bunch of new releases in the electronica, jazz, & experimental genres. You can listen to that show here. Or you can listen to that show here.

May 24. The Dickenbock Report on XRAY. Home from vacation but oh boy was not going to be able to do a show so precorded this one, about an obsolete holiday, Empire Day. You can listen to that show here.

May 19. Self Help Radio on KBOO. Home from vacation but utterly discombobulated still. So I just played some of my favorite music from the year so far. You can listen to that show here. Or you can listen to that show here.

May 19. Corporate Standardized Programming on KBOO. More new stuff, just this in the Americana/indie folk/country genres. You can listen to that show here. Or you can listen to that show here (after Self Help Radio).

The photo above was taken from the plane at the end of a very long flight as we were flying over the Netherlands into Amsterdam. It was very green there. I was so exhausted.

Spoiler alert I still am! Aren't vacations great.

I opted to just play some songs from some of my favorite releases of the year so far. I was also very tired on the show - I think I got jet lag two days after the flight. It was a long flight preceded by many days out & about in a foreign land preceded by a long flight. & I can't sleep on planes for some reason.

In any event, if you'd like to listen to tired Gary playing lots of songs he likes, you can do so now, either at the Self Help Radio website or at the KBOO website. Simple as that. The list of songs is below.

Whither On Vacation Week Three?

Looking at an Amsterdam streetcorner from a tram stop on a gloomy day.

Hey I know I have been back from my vacation for a couple of days but I admit I still haven't gotten my act together so tonight I will be in the studio playing music from some of my favorite releases of the year so far. I'll also be talking about the KBOO Membership Drive happening now. Probably not talking much about my vacation - I guess two weeks ago today I was on my way to Amsterdam, where that picture above was taken. I dunno, do you wanna hear about my vacation? I rode a bike in two different European cities. Different bikes. It was fun!

Anyway. Tonight midnight to 2am it's a half-assed hastily cobbled together Self Help Radio on KBOO. Listen in Portland at 90.7fm. Listen everywhere online at kboo dot fm.

Whither On Vacation?

A fence with tomatoes growing behind & through it.

It's true, I'm going on vacation, so this is the last blog post you'll read from me for a while. I have prepared shows for while I am away tho!

Tonight on KBOO (that is midnight to 3am 5/12/26) I have three hours of songs about tomatoes. It's a long story. I'll tell it maybe sometime.

Next Sunday on XRAY (that is noon to 1pm 5/17/26) a guest host hosts The Dickenbock Report.

Next Tuesday on KBOO (that is midnight to 3am 5/19/26) I have prepared a mix of new releases in the electronic, experimental, & jazz genres.

Sunday after next on XRAY (that is noon to 1pm 5/24/26) I've prepared a show about empires for a dead holiday.

But tune in tonight for a show about tomatoes! Midnight to 3am 90.7fm in Portland, kboo dot fm everywhere. & I'll see you a couple of weeks!

Preface To Vacation Week One: Vacations

An old tweet from around 2023 by Danielle Weisberg reads, "Vacations are not for relaxing. They are for imaging a completely unsustainable fantasy life in a city as equally expensive as your own but with different weather."
(found years ago before Twitter died)

It's true! The wife & I are going on a long vacation. I have already prepared two prerecorded Self Help Radio episodes & two Dickenbock Report episodes. (One of the Dickenbock Report episodes was actually put together by my friend Mark.)

It's the first time in a very long time - if ever - that we are going someplace that's not also a destination for something academic - a conference or research. When we visited Denver in March, she had some gathering to attend & present for. She's kind of afraid we'll have nothing to do.

In addition, we're going overseas in these increasingly unpleasant times - & I'm a little nervous we'll run out of jet fuel & not be able to make it back.

Also of course I'll miss my dogs & cats. It will be the longest I've been away from most of them ever. I wish I could live in the moment like they do but right now they're a little alarmed I'm being overly needy toward them.

Gah! Too much to do! Better get on it. I'm sure I'll talk more about it in about two weeks. Stay tuned.

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: Mother Ocean Day

The Pacific Ocean seen from a San Francisco beach.

May 10 is Mother Ocean Day. On his last show before a two-week vacation, Dick Dickenbock will discuss the ocean & play many musical reports about the ocean. Also, he may boast how many oceans he's crossed & how many times. & if we're really unlucky, he'll tell us about that time he fell in love with a dolphin. We'll have to get him off the mic very quickly. The way he tells it is unnecessarily graphic.

That's tomorrow, Sunday, May 10, from 12-1pm on XRAY FM - 91.1+107.1fm in Portland, xray dot fm everywhere. Bring sunscreen & a beach towel.

Self Help Radio 050526: Hives

https://kboo.fm/media/133392-self-help-radio-5526-hives

Yes Self Help Radio was in the hive this week. Luckily I didn't get stung! Well, not by a bee anyway.

Unsurprisingly, though the word "hives" can also mean the skin ailment, we only had one song about that kind of hives. Though I did manage to talk to two dermatologists. Not sure if we actually talked about hives, tho... & a fellow who keeps beehives in his house. He gets stung!

It's time for you to decide if you want to visit the hive or not. You can do it on the KBOO web site or on the Self Help Radio web site. All the busy things that happened on the show are listed below.

Whither Hives?

Vintage honeycomb background with beehive, honey bees, & tree
(image found here)

Tonight's show has the theme "hives." I have actually done lots of shows related to bees - bees themselves (three times!), honey, buzz, sting. It's not that I have a particular fondness for bees, though I suppose I do - but many of those were related to a membership drive theme on KBOO a few years back. Surprisingly, I never settled on hives. Though doubtless there were hive songs in one or most of the bee-related shows back then.

It being spring, I have noticed the bees coming back, & have loved to have them in my backyard. So I thought about doing another bee-related show & realized hives were an aspect of bees I hadn't explored. & yes, I know, bees aren't the only insects that have hives, & hives can mean other things - a skin condition, or a hive-mind - so the show wouldn't necessarily be all about bees. But I settled on the theme early in the spring & now it's time for a show about hives.

Which you can listen to tonight from midnight to 2am on 90.7fm in Portland & online at kboo dot fm. There might be honey! But also you might get stung.

Preface To Hives: That Is Not A Picture Of A Beehive

What looks like a close-up of a rock face.

It's not. My guess is it's a close-up of a rock face. My computer found this in my raw unedited photos when I asked it to look for pictures of a hive. & by asked it (I use a Mac) I mean I typed it into the search bar. I don't want to talk to my computer. I don't want my computer to talk back to me.

Okay, I just checked. It's actually a close-up of a tree. I took the picture on March 31, 2021, at Tryon State Forest. It's nice that I keep records. How cool would it have been if I had taken a picture of a beehive while I was there?

But I don't even know if I've ever seen a beehive in the wild. & my little brother is allergic to bees & I've never been stung by a bee but I fear that I might be allergic so I would probably freak out around a real live beehive. Though to be honest I would probably still try to take a picture.

Interestingly, I did take some pictures today of beehives but not real beehives. I saw them on a fence as I cycled past. You'll see them shortly.

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: Motorcycle Mass & Blessing Of The Bikes Day

A motorcyclist doing a wheelie on the highway.

Yeah, that guy's probably going to need some divine protection.

May 3 is Motorcycle Mass & Blessing Of The Bikes Day. It's one of the more - um - spiritual holidays around. On this day, motorcyclists (& apparently bicyclists too) assemble for a special mass to have their bikes blessed. Dick Dickenbock isn't allowed on a motorcycle anymore (he's going to be commuting to work on his recumbent bicycle) but he thinks the day is newsworthy, so we'll most probably enjoy musical reports about motorcycles as well as the regular reporting you are used to.

That's tomorrow, Sunday, from noon to 1pm, on 91.1+107.1fm in Portland, xray dot fm everywhere - especially the open road. Just please, wear your helmet.

This Week In Self Help: April 24 26 + 28

A garage with a broken door.

Look, I have a lot of pictures of garages okay? Far more pictures than I have of "indiepop."

This week (it goes back to a Friday ago) I did this:

Friday April 24 on XRAY. I subbed a show & played songs about the radio & asked for money for XRAY's Spring Fund Drive. & we made the goal! Huzzah! If you wanna, listen to the show here.

Sunday April 26 on XRAY, there was an episode of The Dickenbock Report for National Garage Day. You can listen to that show here.

Tuesday April 28 on KBOO, I continued my Indiepop A To Z series - the eightieth episode! - in the letter. You can listen to that show here or you can listen to that show here.

Also Tuesday April 28 on KBOO, I had an episode of Corporate Standardized Programming in which I finished playing musicians who died in 2025 & started playing those who died this year. You can listen to that show here (after Self Help Radio) or you can listen to that show here.

& that's what I did on the radio the last week of April!

Self Help Radio 042826: Indiepop A To Z # 80

A collage of album/single covers of releases played on the show, featuring the artists Slumber, Slumber Party, Slumbook, Kelly Slusher, Smack Dab, Small Factory, Jason Smart, The Smashing Times, A Smile & A Ribbon, Smiling Marianne, Smiling Strangers, The Smith Garrett Band, Brix Smith, Graham Smith, Karl Smith, Kendra Smith, Linda Smith, Nell Smith, The Smiths, Smitten Kitten, The Smittens, Smudge, The Snakes Of Shake, The Snapdragons, Snapper, Sneaky Feelings, The Sneetches, & Snippet

It's hard to believe that I have done eighty of these episodes. & even harder to believe I might do eighty more! I will obviously not live to see the end of this series. Which is an attempt (as the name suggests) to play lots of indiepop artists in alphabetical order. I explain on the show.

Yes, we're still in the letter S, traveling during this show from Slumber to Snippet. The biggest, most influential group this time around is The Smiths, & it was tough picking a representative song. At least one listener thought I did a decent job tho!

In any event. If you like indiepop &/or artists played in alphabetical order, this show is for you. You can listen now or whenever either at the KBOO website or at the Self Help Radio website. It was just songs & a little me talking in-between so the list below is everything on the show.

The series returns in August. & then every three months until I die. & I am not joking.

Whither Indiepop A To Z # 80?

A window full of cat figurines.

Tonight's Self Help Radio continues my Indiepop A To Z series, featuring lots of twee music, so, I thought, what is twee-er than a window full of elaborate cat figurines? Hence the photo above.

Let's see - we're still in the letter S. We'll start with Slumber & we'll end with - I don't know! What I do know is that we won't be finishing the letter S any time soon. It's the most popular letter in the English language! & not just because of plurals!

Alphabetize with me tonight from midnight to 2am on KBOO - 90.7fm in town, kboo dot fm everywhere.

Preface To Indiepop A To Z # 80: Texting Another Radio Show

A small white stand-alone garage.

Blah blah I'm playing more indiepop in alphabetical order this week blah blah.

What I wanted to say is that I got a funny text from a listener of The Dickenbock Report today. The whole schtick of the show is that there's this very old, somewhat famous news anchor, Dick Dickenbock, who has a show based on his fame but who never shows up & I'm the host. People text me at XRAY & call me "Dick," as do my guests, although I'm obviously not him, as he is fictional & I am not (I hope). But it's super fun when people play along. I got this text today:

Can you pass on a message to Dick. Tell him that this month's snort and bubbles party is at Bob and Mildred's. Jack and Emma are on vacation. (Dick calls them the Jackhammers! He's such a card!)

It's also very flattering when people step into the dumb world I've created. It delights me.

For the record, I texted back:

I'll pass along the message, thank you. Dick Dickenbock will be very grateful - he thought he might not be welcome since last time he brought that llama - he was afraid it was too show-offish.

Or something like that.

Now all I need to do is find someone who can impersonate Dick Dickenbock when he finally appears on the show...

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: National Garage Day

A garage door partially open, revealing a cat peeking out.

April 26 is National Garage Day. Although we can't broadcast from the garage, which where Dick Dickenbock's wife makes him go when he wants to smoke his pipe, we can report on garages - why they're important, what they're used for, why I need a pinball machine in mine.

That's Sunday, from noon to 1pm, on 91.1+107.1fm in Portland, online everywhere at xray dot fm. Wait. The garage door opener is out of batteries? How're we going to get the show out of there?

This Week In Self Help: April 17 19 + 21

A photograph of a statue of the elephant-headed Indian god Ganesh.
(image from here)

Sadly my show about idols didn't have any songs about the god Ganesh, pictured above. There probably are plenty, I blame myself for not searching deep enough.

Oh yeah what did I do on the radio this week? I'll tell ya.

Friday 4/17 The Songcircle on KBOO. Lots of new stuff. Listen to that show here.

Sunday 4/19 The Dickenbock Report on XRAY. National Garlic Day. Listen to that show here.

Tuesday 4/21 Self Help Radio on KBOO. A show about idols. Listen to that show here. Or listen to that show here.

Tuesday 4/21 Corporate Standardized Programming on KBOO. I play more new releases. Listen to that show here (after Self Help Radio). Or listen to that show here.

Still can't believe I confused icons & idols. A listener texted me a long explanation which was better than the one I shared on the air. Maybe I should be giving my radio show to them.

Self Help Radio 042126: Idols

A couple of interesting sculptures that could be idols, with the Self Help Radio logo placed near them.

Despite having a tendency to confuse the words idol & icon, I somehow managed to make my way through this week's episode of Self Help Radio, which was in fact about idols (not icons). I played so many songs about idols that I suppose now I am officially an idolater. Or was, for two hours. I don't know if my radio show can really make anything official.

Howsoever you feel about idols - whether your religion uses them or forbids them - or if like me you have no religion so can feel about idols the way you wish - you'll be pleased I think to enjoy many songs about many different kinds of idols - as well as a few about idolizing, which is maybe more innocuous & less religiously charged than the average idol.

You can listen this show either at the KBOO website or at the Self Help Radio website. Most everything that happened on the show is listed below. Including a few times where I somehow say "icon" when I mean "idol." Sheesh!

Whither Idols?

A computer (turned off) on a desk is surrounded by numerous Eastern Orthodox religious icons. Below is the text, "There are too many icons on this desktop."

That picture above is something I found on a internets over ten years ago, so I can't tell you where it's from. Trying to find it using a search engine's reverse-lookup feature shows me it was a joke replicated many times - but I suspect I found the original image on Tumblr at some point.

& yes, the picture shows icons but the show tonight is about idols - from the religious ones to the ones we admire for being figures in popular culture. I just liked the picture about icons.

There is a very dumb roundabout way I came to the theme. I was driving somewhere in Portland - probably in my hood - when I passed a Dollar Tree. (It must've been in my hood as there is one nearby on Foster.) For the longest time when I would see the name of that discount store, I would try to come up with some joke that will allow me to use the punchline, "I, Dollar Tree" - which would sound like "idolatry." It might even be something I could work into a radio show - but I suppose the theme would have to be "idolatry."

The thing is, there weren't all that many songs about idolatry, but there were lots about idols. So I decided to do a show about idols. I never did figure out a way to use the "I, Dollar Tree" pun. & I probably won't. So I share it with you now.

Told you it was dumb.

Preface To Idols: A Felt Record

The album cover of Felt's The Strange Idols Pattern & Other Short Stories
(image from Discogs)

This is a record of which I am fond, Felt's 1984 release The Strange Idols Pattern & Other Short Stories. Curiously, there's not a song on the record called "The Strange Idols Pattern" & idols are not referenced in any of the songs so nothing from the record will show up on this week's program. It is Felt's third record & contains three songs of theirs I would consider excellent examples of their excellence: "Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow," "Dismantled King Is Off The Throne," & "Crystal Ball."

Though I suspect a later deep-dive in the Creation label would have led me to discover Felt eventually, I was introduced to the band when I won one of their records on the radio. I was listening to KNON in Dallas in the summer of 1987 & I was the caller who won The Pictorial Jackson Review. The deejay asked me if I knew about the band, I said no, he said, "Oh you're gonna like them." & he was right!

One thing you'll never really see on this blog is music criticism from me because, one, I'm not a critic, & two, I don't think my opinions, such as they are, are valuable enough to anyone but me to have any desire to share them. As I have said before, I am lucky - I get to play the music I like on the radio. Critics use their own standards to try to persuade their audiences what is "good" or "bad" or "important." None of that makes any difference to me vis-a-vis your opinion. If you don't like something I like, that affects me not at all (although I guess it means you won't want to listen to my radio show). I'd much rather share things I like with you than explaining to you why I don't like things. & even when I don't like things, it doesn't bother me that someone else might like it. It's all subjective.

But if you asked me if I'd recommend this record, I'd say, sure! Though I'd tell you my favorite Felt record is Poem Of The River. There's a couple of (probably out-of-print) singles collections called Absolute Classic Masterpieces which give a thorough overview of the band. I don't rank my favorite bands but I can tell you Felt are one of my favorite bands.

& they're a band I thought of when I knew I was going to do a show about idols. A shame that they don't have a song I can play on the show.

Coming Up Tomorrow On The Dickenbock Report: National Garlic Day

A head of garlic on a windowsill.

April 19 is National Garlic Day. The Dickenbock Report is already a pungent program, but this week it'll be pretty garlicky. Musical reports, a report on Portland's Garlic Days, & more.

It's happening during XRAY's Spring Fund Drive, so please support the station if you can! Visit this address to give to XRAY. Visit this address to support The Report (which of course all goes to XRAY).

& make sure to listen tomorrow, Sunday, from noon to 1pm on 91.1+107.1fm in town, & online everywhere at xray dot fm. & sorry about the breath.

This Week In Self Help: April 12 + 14

A shot of a window taken at an angle, in the corner there's a partial sign on which you can read the word "palace."

For whatever reason, I don't have a lot of pictures of palaces on my computer. I think I already said I've never visited a palace. So that's why. My computer found this picture - taken in Puerto Rico in 2013 - where you can see the word palace. That's about as good as it gets with pictures of palaces for me.

This week was another week when I just did my regular shows. Those were:

The Dickenbock Report Sunday April 12. National Licorice Day. Listen here.
Self Help Radio Tuesday April 14. A show about palaces. Listen here. Or listen here.
Corporate Standardized Programming Tuesday April 14. A show featuring artists we lost in late 2025. Listen here (after Self Help Radio). Or listen here.

That's all. You may go now.

Self Help Radio 041426: Palaces

A vetical sign that says Palace with the Self Help Radio logo added at the bottom.

It's usual practice isn't it for a palace to have a sign or marquee outside to let everyone know it's a palace, right? That's so cool.

Here's a show about palaces. I don't think I've ever been in a palace. But I talked to people who live in a palace. & a home improvement dude who makes "little palaces." & played lots of songs about palaces. That seems almost as good? Okay I know it isn't but let me have my illusions!

You can listen to the show at the Self Help Radio website & at the KBOO website. Lots of stuff happened on the show, most of which is noted below.

Hey! Now we can say with spent two hours in palaces together! Okay maybe not.

Whither Palaces?

A sign outside a business that reads "Palace Barber Shop"

That's the sign outside what used to be the Palace Barber Shop in Grand Prairie, Texas. I took that picture when I was in the metroplex in March, 2023, but according to Yelp, it was already closed by then - I must've looked in to see, mustn't I have? I sure did like the sign, though.

Yes, the theme this week is palaces. I'm not normally inclined to think of such things - I suppose I'd go on a tour through a palace if the opportunity arose, but I'd rather go to an art museum. Still, one late night in the dark of winter, getting ready to go to bed but looking up some information about a book I was reading, I stumbled upon a short documentary about the palace at Versailles. & I said to myself, Self - should we do a show about palaces? & usually that's all it takes.

You might ask me about the book I was reading & surprisingly it wasn't about anything French or royal or even historical. I do my best to frustrate the algorithm every chance I get.

Join me in the mind palace that is my radio show tonight from midnight to 2am on 90.7fm in town & online at kboo dot fm. It's very big & spooky & lonesome in a mind palace at night. I'll need the company.
